According to recent research by a group of Canadian researchers, it appears that the injection of local anesthetic would be much less painful if it were heated in advance.

In reaching this conclusion, researchers reviewed 18 studies involving a total of 831 patients, of which they found that injections preheated managed to lead to “clinically significant reductions in pain, beyond the fact that anesthesia is blocked or not or whether it applied subcutaneously (under the skin), intradermal (skin), or if the amount injected was large or small.

Thus, for the study have warmed injections in several different ways, within them can be listed controlled water baths, incubators, liquid heaters, warming trays or a hot needle. Also taken into account for the study, published online in the Feb. 8 issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine, the fact that emergency physicians usually use their hands to warm the injections.

In a press release published in the journal, Dr. Anna Taddio, University of Toronto has stated that “warm injection is a cost-free as emergency physicians can take to reduce the pain of injection, and added that “patients are often afraid to see a needle, but doing something as simple as heating the injection body temperature can make the painful part of the visit to the emergency room into something more tolerable.”
